Why Motivation Isn't the Problem: What to Do When You Feel Stuck

Darlyn Magaña | June 16, 2026

Have you ever found yourself saying, "I'll do it when I feel more motivated"? Maybe it's going to the gym, responding to emails, studying for an exam, cleaning your home, or finally scheduling that appointment you've been putting off. Days turn into weeks, and before long, you're frustrated with yourself for not taking action. Many people assume they struggle because they lack motivation. In reality, motivation is often not the problem at all.

As a therapist, one of the most common concerns I hear from clients is, "I know what I need to do I just can't get myself to do it." Whether you're navigating anxiety, ADHD, perfectionism, or burnout, feeling stuck is often less about motivation and more about what is happening underneath it.

The Problem With Waiting for Motivation

We often think motivation comes first and action comes second. If we could just feel inspired, energized, or confident enough, then we would finally take action. But motivation doesn't usually work that way. Think about a time when you didn't feel like going for a run, attending a social event, or starting a project. Chances are, once you began, it became easier to continue. Motivation often follows action rather than preceding it. When we wait until we feel ready, motivated, or certain, we can end up stuck in a cycle of procrastination and self-criticism.

What Is Really Getting in the Way?

When people describe themselves as "unmotivated," there is often something deeper happening beneath the surface. For some, anxiety is the barrier. The task itself may not feel difficult, but the possibility of making a mistake, failing, or being judged creates enough discomfort that avoidance feels safer. For others, perfectionism gets in the way. If something cannot be done perfectly, the brain may convince us not to start at all. What looks like procrastination on the outside is often fear on the inside.

Individuals with ADHD frequently experience challenges with task initiation and executive functioning. They may genuinely want to complete a task and fully understand its importance, yet still find it difficult to get started. This can lead to feelings of frustration, shame, and self-blame.

And sometimes, what people call a lack of motivation is actually burnout. When you've been carrying stress, responsibilities, and emotional demands for an extended period of time, your mind and body may be signaling a need for rest rather than more pressure.

Why Small Steps Matter

One of the biggest misconceptions about productivity is that change has to be dramatic. In reality, small actions are often what create momentum. A five-minute walk may not seem significant, but it reinforces the identity of someone who values their health. Reading one page may not feel like much progress, but it is often enough to help you continue. Opening the document, sending the email, or making the phone call can be the hardest part. When we focus on the next manageable step instead of the entire journey, action becomes more accessible.

Moving Away From Self-Criticism

Many people respond to feeling stuck by becoming harder on themselves. They tell themselves they should be doing more, trying harder, or performing better. Unfortunately, self-criticism rarely creates lasting motivation. More often, it increases shame and makes action feel even more difficult. What tends to create sustainable change is self-compassion. Recognizing that you're struggling does not mean you're lazy or incapable. It means you're human. Approaching yourself with understanding rather than judgment can make it easier to take the next step forward.
